Why invest in your wedding paper?

Because planning is a whirlwind:

I take the burden of timelines, etiquette, and mailing off of your shoulders and replace it with excitement for all of the beautiful possibilities.

Because you can't put an e-vite in the scrapbook:

Your letterpress invitations will be paper heirlooms brought to life using traditional artisan techniques and antique machinery.

Because mass-produced doesn't befit a love story for the ages:

As their first impression of your big day, your guests will smile opening their invitation parcels because they will feel so authentically you.

Meaghan and Jim

Ghent City Hall Wedding
01/07

Meaghan and Jim got married in a city hall ceremony in Ghent, Belgium in 2019. They were looking for stationery to commemorate their wedding date.

As a couple, they are avid explorers of the world and nature, deeply curious, intellectual, fun-loving and a bit mischievous.

My task was to create a suite that reflected the unique vibrance of their relationship and was grounded in a sense of place: Ghent, where they lived at the time of their wedding.

Overall Design
02/07

I wanted to capture the old-world European feeling of Ghent, and drew inspiration from art and cartography from the Flemish Golden Age.

Wheat-colored paper and olive brown ink gave the feeling of aged documents, forgotten and rediscovered, that had their own untold stories.

The deep blue-green of the envelopes added to the dark academia vibe, perfect for a couple with two doctorates between them.

An elegant script font paired with an antique serif lent themselves to the historical feel.

Blind Debossing
03/07

The decorative border was formed from a combination of printed linework and an illusion oval formed from blind-debossed corners.

The corners were filled with illustrated Ghent azaleas, a nod to both the city and the couple’s penchant for gardening.

Topping the design was a ligature monogram of their initials.

Illustration
04/07

Jim and Meaghan are both enthusiastic bird-watchers, and so I included a delicate illustration of the Belgian national bird, the Common Kestrel, and the Japanese national bird, the Green Pheasant, to represent their respective backgrounds.

Stylistically, I took inspiration from the Japanese ink painting technique of Sumi-e. I rendered each bird with simplified, expressive ink strokes, a style that translates beautifully to letterpress.

Quotation
05/07

“This is where I ended up, this is where I am supposed to be."
-Past Lives (2023)

At the top of the design, I included the above quote that is particularly meaningful to the couple from the film Past Lives.

It refers to the Korean concept of In-Yun, literally meaning ‘fate,’ that posits there are invisible threads of connection that tie people together across lifetimes.

Venue Portrait
06/07

I dedicated an entire piece of their suite to a detailed architectural portrait of the beautiful Stadhuis Gent, the city hall where Meaghan and Jim had their courthouse wedding.

The building is covered in ornate stonework, and so I chose a single feature to illustrate rather than losing details in a view of the full building. I focused on the door that every couple getting married there passes through.

I wanted it to feel like an architectural study pulled from the journal of some long-forgotten student-of-the-world on their travels and so left the edges loose and sketchy, emphasizing texture and values.

Envelope Liner
07/07

For the envelope liner, I created tonal charcoal artwork based upon a historic reference photograph of a swan upon water. The texture of the charcoal gave a lush, almost abstract quality.

The swan subject of the piece was inspired on multiple fronts: the couple’s interest in birds, the symbolism for love and fidelity, and a cheeky nod to a piece of Ghent trivia gleefully shared with me by Meaghan: there are a famous set of gilded swan relief sculptures on a historic facade along the Korenlei canal that carry a somewhat less romantic symbolic meaning!

Frequent Queries

When should I place my stationery order?

It is never too early to get on my calendar to ensure availability! I suggest submitting an inquiry eight to twelve months before your wedding or earlier to fully enjoy the experience and avoid any rush fees.

Due to the custom and hand-crafted nature of my work, I require at least three to four months to produce your invitations ahead of your intended mailing date. I recommend a mailing date of twelve weeks before your wedding date.

Can you accommodate a rush order?

Depending on my availability and how limited your timeline is, I do offer rush orders. Please inquire immediately to determine my availability, required timelines, and rush fees.

Do you offer Save the Dates and Day-Of Paper?

Yes! I do require the purchase of an invitation package in order to accommodate Save the Dates or Day-Of paper. Inquire early to allow ample time for Save-the-Date design and production.

Day-of paper is invoiced separately and design will begin closer to your wedding date. Offerings include programs, menus, escort/place cards, small signage, table numbers, and thank you cards.

Do you only design for weddings?

No! I am happy to create custom letterpress paper for any event or occasion. Write me a note to begin the conversation about your project.

Do you have a minimum quantity?

No, I will print any quantity of invitations you require. That said, I do have a minimum investment of $4,000 that must be met for custom wedding paper, regardless of quantity.

Couples invest an average of $6,000-$8,000 on their custom wedding stationery, and an additional $3,000-6,000 for Save the Dates and Day-Of paper.

can you send me a sample?

Upon booking, you will receive my signature sample parcel so that you can see and feel the quality of the paper and printing.

If you would like to receive a sample parcel before committing, I am able to send one to you for $15 which will be credited to your order upon booking. Please send me a note to request.

Why are revisions limited to two rounds?

I pride myself on capturing the vision in the design phase so that there are minimal adjustments required when you receive your digital proofs. Limiting to two rounds protects the project timeline and prevents details from falling through the cracks.

I am confident you will be delighted with the results in two rounds, but if for any reason you feel the need for more changes, further rounds can be added to your order for an additional charge.

the Investment

The minimum investment for working with Betzer & Head is $4,000. Every order is fully custom and includes all pieces and services detailed above.

The average final budget for our couples is $6,000-8,000, and an additional $3,000-6,000 for Save the Dates and Day-Of paper.

Submit an inquiry to receive a custom proposal. I am happy to maximize your budget to create an heirloom-worthy wedding stationery suite.
